Dr. John C. Marsden (1937–2008)
Dr. John C. Marsden was a distinguished biologist and scientific administrator who helped guide the Linnean Society of London, the world’s oldest active biological society. As its Executive Secretary from 1989 to 2004, he managed the Society’s operations while promoting scientific debate, public engagement and a deeper appreciation of the history of science.
John was a passionate advocate for taxonomy and the study of biological diversity. He repeatedly emphasized the urgent need to train new generations of taxonomists who could identify species before habitat loss, climate change and extinction placed them beyond recovery. His commitment to the future of biological research is commemorated through the John C. Marsden Medal, awarded annually by the Linnean Society for an outstanding doctoral thesis in biology, and through a legacy fund established in his name.
Educated in biology and chemistry at the University of Oxford, John pursued a varied academic career. He taught at the University of York and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and was a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Child Health, University of London. He later worked at the City of London Polytechnic and became Head of Life Sciences at the Polytechnic of Central London, where he also served as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science.
John invited the Institute of Ecotechnics to organize the Fourth International Conference on Closed Ecological Systems and Biospherics, hosted by the Linnean Society. He subsequently spoke at and participated in several Institute conferences, particularly valuing their unusual inclusion of artists, explorers and original thinkers alongside leading scientists from around the world.
A witty and erudite speaker, John delighted in sharing his knowledge of the history of science and demonstrating its importance to understanding both the present and the future. In recognition of his distinguished service, he was elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society honoris causa in 2005. The following year, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to biology.
