Michel Lippitsch is an artist, sailor, and longtime member of the R/V Heraclitus community, having sailed aboard the research vessel for many years. His life and work bring together art, seafaring, cultural exchange and a deep respect for traditional maritime knowledge.

Michel is also a prominent figure in the world of Jong racing, a traditional Malay pastime involving small, exquisitely balanced sailing boats propelled by the wind. He has dedicated himself to preserving and promoting this remarkable tradition, offering classes for both children and adults and sharing the knowledge required to build, sail and appreciate the boats.

He has organized numerous Jong racing events, including the Utara and Selatan races, which bring communities together to celebrate the skill, beauty and excitement of this distinctive maritime activity.

Michel’s work is closely connected to the cultural heritage of the Orang Suku Laut, the Indigenous maritime people who traditionally lived throughout and navigated the waters surrounding the Riau Archipelago. He emphasizes the importance of respecting and preserving this heritage, together with the clean seas, healthy coastal environments and natural winds upon which Jong racing depends.

Through his art, teaching and community events, Michel has become a respected advocate for Jong racing. His work continues to inspire new generations to appreciate and sustain this unique expression of Malay maritime culture.
